How to Avoid Overbrushing Teeth

You’re so enthusiastic about brushing and oral care that you just can’t help but take it out on your teeth. Brush harder to get them cleaner, right?

Wrong!

Some of our most focused and determined patients fall into the pitfall of over brushing. It’s easy to brush the teeth and gums too hard and to damage the soft tissues of the mouth. When it comes to brushing, easy does it!

How to prevent overbrushing:

  • Use a soft-bristled brush. The softest bristles won’t fail at the job. They’re more effective than stronger bristles!
  • Brush just long enough to clean the teeth and gum line, but not longer.
  • Floss gently and slowly.
  • Use an easy hand. Don’t apply too much pressure.
  • And if it’s still tough to avoid overbrushing, try an electric toothbrush that moderates pressure for you.

Why you should prevent overbrushing:

  • Overbrushing can lead to receding gums
  • Overbrushing damages dentin on the teeth
  • Overbrushing can cause cuts and scrapes, which can become infected more easily than intact gums.
  • Overbrushing leads to tooth sensitivity.

If you have questions about whether you’re overbrushing, ask! We’ll be able to tell at a glance!
